Sooner or later, we all come to that point in life where we must decide whether to stay in our current home or downsize our lifestyle, maybe even move to a resort retirement community or an independent-living residence.Any of these decisions can lead to a feeling of being overwhelmed. So, where do you begin?
That’s when it’s time to turn to A Place In Time for help. We can help you and your family make those difficult decisions, work with you through the transition, and be there to guide you in the process of either making your home more manageable through de-cluttering and re-organizing, or downsizing and relocating.
Our outreach to the senior community includes frequent participation in seminars, programs, and major events that help provide seniors with information about everyday living and long-term planning, and particularly how to minimize the stress that comes with relocation to a new home or retirement community. This was taken at the 2014 Wellness Fair in Tempe, organized by the Alliance Care Team (ACT), an East Valley organization that serves the senior community. A Place in Time is an ACT member.
Staying in your Home
Choosing to relocate at the current time may not be what you have in mind. Yet, as a senior, your lifestyle has changed and, along with that, the way your home functions for you.
If you decide to stay where you are, then it’s probably time to take stock of what has accumulated through the years, organize it, and begin the de-cluttering process. Our staff is trained to assist in making your everyday items more accessible and re-purpose unused items.
If you are not ready to relocate at this time, but may in the future, we can help ease the stress of doing everything at one time by starting the downsizing and possible gift-giving to family and friends months, or even years, in advance. At the same time, you can enable your current home to serve you better.
Easing the Stress of Relocating
Relocating can be disorienting, confusing, and even depressing. And, if it’s a health crisis that unexpectedly brings the transition to pass, planning ahead will have made that crisis a little more manageable.
If the time has arrived to consider transitioning to a smaller home, a retirement community, or an independent or assisted-living community, a relocation specialist can be brought in to make the move as comfortable and seamless as possible. The specialist will act as a liaison be
tween you, your family, and the new community.
A Place In Time can be that liaison, and can expedite the entire procedure. After the downsizing and de-cluttering process is complete, the packing is generally done in one day and, for most clients, the move is completed the next day. There is no living out of boxes for days, or even weeks!
Re-creating the Comfort of Home
The caring staff of professionals at A Place In Time brings peace of mind to the move. We try to re-create the home that was left behind, but on a smaller scale, by re-hanging photos, arranging furniture and setting up personal items as close as possible to the original home, if that is what the client prefers.
At A Place In Time, we supervise the packing, help with shipping of items to family and friends, and assist with the re-purposing or gifting of items you no longer choose to keep. At the same time, we recognize that the client is in charge of the decision-making. We are there to assist in making some difficult decisions.
For many families, the subject of relocating to a new home is often an awkward topic of conversation. It’s important to keep the lines of communication open between you and your children. A Place In Time can refer families to a trained specialist who can provide guidance in this area, thus helping to facilitate the conversation between both parties. We can also be a conduit to other Senior Services in the area.
